Why does ARC seek to empower women? Why is our Board of Directors made up of females?

ARC seeks to empower women through the mental and physical benefits of movement and running because we believe that women deserve to live vibrant lives, utilizing their unique gifts to serve one another and ultimately create a better world.

Our Board of Directors includes diverse, brilliant, and inspired WOMEN because women have a lived experience that reflects a unique understanding of the challenges women face.

At ARC we are about creating a safe space for women to feel supported in their health and wellness journey. This allows for the vulnerability and authenticity that is essential to create a better tomorrow.

We seek to empower women to thrive despite the many challenges they face:

  • In households, women most often carry the invisible labor and a more significant mental load associated with all of the challenges and joys of managing families. This is supported by a vast amount of research.
  • Societal norms do not favor a woman making contributions to the world at large, but rather taking care of her family.
  • It is commonplace for women to give so much of themselves to their children and family that they forget or feel guilty about actually taking care of themselves.
  • Diversity and inclusion is particularly important as feminist movements have historically benefitted white women while leaving women of color behind. For instance, pay inequities are even worse for women of color. The intersection of gender and race create even greater barriers for the advancement of women of color.
  • Women are less accepted when exerting assertiveness in leadership positions versus men.
  • Women have a history of subservience, which is still expected by many males.
  • In many countries, women still are not permitted to attend school or work.
  • Women go through childbirth and do not always have the support they need to get back to work regardless of the physical/mental/socioeconomic challenges they may face. When women get back into the work force after child rearing they face an even wider pay gap.
  • Women are paid less for the same jobs as men.
  • There is a continued lack of women in positions of power - whether within corporations, political leadership, or nonprofits - which further exacerbates inequities in the workplace and across societies as a whole.  Women make up 50% percent of the world population, but the percentage of women CEOs in Fortune 500 companies is 10%. The corporate boardrooms of the largest companies hold enormous influence and have more financial power than governments of many developing countries. The 500 largest corporations in the world represent nearly one third of the global GDP. However, less than 6.7 percent of board chairs globally were women in 2021 and only a quarter of Fortune 500 board members were women.
  • The patriarchal structures upon which our society is built further foster the perception that women are less qualified or less competent than men.
